A National Provider Identifier number, or NPI, is like a passport assigned by the folks at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS). It’s a unique 10 digit number that is used to identify healthcare providers. Providers must use their NPI to identify themselves in all HIPAA transactions.
