HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems)

HCAHPS is a survey administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) that measures patients’ perspectives on their experiences at hospitals. In other words, it’s kinda like Yelp* for hospitals.

HCAHPS scores are important to hospitals because the higher the score, the higher the reimbursements from the CMS.

*If you don’t know what Yelp is, it’s a useful site for finding out whether a restaurant or service is awesome (5 stars on Yelp). It’s based on real-people reviews so you know it’s mostly unbiased.

CMS will up the ante over the next few years, with 2% of reimbursement $ being at risk by 2017. Click To Tweet
