SMART on FHIR

SMART on FHIR is a set of open specifications for creating medical apps that integrate with electronic health records and data warehouses. SMART on FHIR apps are exciting because they add new functionalities to EHRs. Some apps aim to educate patients, such as the Duke PillBox app, which makes it easier for patients to manage complex medication regimes.

Other apps assist clinicians with their daily work, such as the EnrG | Rheum app. The app allows rheumatologists to aggregate data in a clinical way and saves clinicians valuable time by collecting data from the patient about their wellbeing, via a questionnaire, prior to their visit.

If your hospital wants to use SMART on FHIR apps, you’ll need an integration engine that sits in between your EHR and the app to accept, receive, and transform FHIR resources.
