Web Services

A web service is any piece of software that allows itself, and it’s information, to be accessed over the Internet. It allows other applications to query, modify or insert data remotely without the need to go through a graphical user interface (GUI).

RESTful web services are on the rise in healthcare because unlike HL7, which uses a broadcast model, web services can be queried for just the data you need at any given time. This can dramatically reduce the amount of patient data that travels over external connections at any given time.
